Winter Outfit Formulas I Always Come Back To

When I think about building winter outfits, I start with a tight edit of reliable staples. These are pieces that mix well together and make layering feel intentional rather than overwhelming. For me, that usually means a long coat, a tailored knit, straight-leg trousers, denim that fits just right, a versatile boot, a cozy scarf, and a structured bag. Once those foundations are in place, repeating what works becomes second nature, even on days when I feel like I have nothing to wear. Color also plays a big role in my approach. I'm typically drawn to a palette I know flatters me, like rich neutrals, cobalt blue, pastels, and cherry red, so even the simplest outfits feel pulled together. That consistency makes winter dressing easier and far more enjoyable.

Below, I’m sharing a couple of outfit formulas I always come back to during the colder months. I’ve also linked everything I’m wearing (and similar pieces) in my ShopMy profile here, if you want to shop the looks directly or pull inspiration for your own closet.

This is one of those outfits that’s surprisingly simple to pull together but always looks intentional. A denim jumpsuit takes the guesswork out of getting dressed; just layer a long coat over it for warmth and structure. Finish with a woven black bag and a pair of statement kitten heels (leopard is always a yes) to add a point of contrast without overcomplicating things. It’s an easy formula you can replicate again and again, whether you’re running around the city or heading out for dinner.

This is my go-to formula for days when I want to keep things casual but still feel put together. A bold red knit cardigan adds just enough interest to an otherwise simple jeans-and-top combo, and it’s a color I’ve loved slowly working into my wardrobe lately. If there’s one styling takeaway here, it’s finding colors that really work for you because those that do instantly elevate even the simplest outfit.
